DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT SAYS NO TO TOUTING EJIME UDUEME
Four persons have been arrested at the Asaba head bridge by the Delta State Directorate of Transport and officials of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority DESTMA for touting and illegal collection of unauthorized levies from drivers and commuters.
The commissioner for transport Mr Vincent Uduaghan who led the team on the arrest said nobody or any organization was authorized to collect money from motorists coming from Onitsha into Asaba or the ones coming from Asaba into Onitsha.
Mr Uduaghan said security men have been put on red alert to nip such act in the bud in all parts of the state adding that miscreants were using it to extort money and molest innocent citizens and advised drivers not to part with money for such group of people.
The Transport Commissioner affirmed that anyone apprehended will face the full weight of the law adding that the era where illegality thrived was over.
He said government will not fold its hands and allow miscreants obstruct the good intentions of the present administration of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa made to better the lives of the people.
For his part the Director General of DESTMA Chief Steven Dieseruvwe said the arrest was sequel to a tip off on the activities of the touts who brandish fake identify cards given them by the state government.
He said every act of illegality on any route in Delta will be resisted and advised those involved to relocate out of the state or be ready to face severe consequences.
Some of the motorists who were earlier detained by the touts before the team swoop on them thanked the transport commissioner Mr Uduaghan and DESTMA officials for their intervention pointing out that the people have perpetuated their illegal act for a long time.
They urged the state government to ensure that those arrested were prosecuted according to law to act as deterrent to others.
